New uni set up for free spirits (May 4 2003 By Erica Cervini)
- Academic standards are falling, students are less motivated and lecturers’ morale is low.
- recent report cards on tertiary institutions, provide ample evidence of a crisis facing universities.
- set up their own university called Akademos, aims to offer students a free tertiary education in which they have time to ponder ideas.
- universities have become so caught up in competing for students and money they have little time to allow students to make sense of the world they live in.
- forefront of “the creation of the future”.
- In July Akademos will start its first 10-week course, exploring globalisation. Academics will donate their time, and the course will be free and open to all.
- gives academics the chance to meet students who are keen “to learn for the sake of learning”.
- Akademos is a community-based university, which allows for broader discussion, not constrained by formal assessment and instrumental outcomes
IMO:
Well, this proved my comment on the falling of the education ideology, which students focus on working experience more than on the theory. It is necessary to rephrase that “Knowledge” consists of both theory and experience. If there is a lack of theory, human’s creation will become rare and will lead to degeneration of the whole species.
